WiSe 16/17: U.S. Innovation and Technological Change - Issues in Economics and Policy

This course will consider theories and policy discussions about innovation and technological change. It will introduce major concepts of innovation economics and cover topics like innovative firms and markets (e.g. entrepreneurship, competition and innovation), the role of intellectual property, innovation and consumers (e.g. diffusion) and technology, wages and jobs. Some sessions will include discussions of articles, case studies and/or policy applications of the U.S. After completing the course, students should have acquainted themselves with theoretical and political approaches towards innovation and technological change. This should enable them to think critically about current debates in this field from an economic perspective.
Course requirements: This course requires active participation, biweekly 1-page response papers to required readings and/or topics discussed in class and a presentation and short essay (8-10 pages). The course will be conducted in English and submitted work should be in English as well. close
