Kirsten Middeke
Comments
In this course, we will study the history of the English language from its beginnings to the present day, focussing on the verbal system. Students will be introduced to the most important sources of historical language data (dictionaries, thesauri, corpora) and will be given research tasks on all levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, text and discourse), dealing with issues such as strong vs. weak verbs or the evolution and use of tense and aspect markers. We will combine qualitative and quantitative approaches, studying frequency effects on productivity as well as the role of semantic processes like metaphor. Credit requirements:
- - regular and active participation in discussions
- - weekly reading assignments and/or research homework
- - a 5-minute presentation introducing a research tool to the group
- - an academic paper of c2000 words
