WiSe 16/17: PS-Medieval English Literatures II: The Earthly and Ethereal: Minor Poems in Major Manuscipts
Participants will discuss the evolution of the Medieval English lyric, both secular and religious. Attention will not only be paid to differences of genre, style, versification and metaphor, but also to the cultural background which gave rise to these works and to the manuscripts which provide them. When appropriate, parallels in the visual arts will be pointed out to highlight traditional concepts and their reflection in medieval and modern literature.

Procedure and assessment: Each week poems and texts will be earmarked for study at home and discussion in class.
