WiSe 16/17: S-Culture-Gender-Media II: Troubling Gender
Cordula Lemke
Comments
Since Judith Butler's famous book Gender Trouble, attempts to contest gender binaries have gained ground in cultural productions. Although the fascination for uncertainty in gender representations is clearly not new, Butler's celebratory approach has proved to be immensely liberating – not just in the field of Gender Studies. Its impact on writers has led to a rich variety of texts which engage with this question of troubling gender from many different perspectives. Although the re-readings offered by these texts are mainly in keeping with Butler's positive outlook, they raise a multitude of questions regarding the outcome of a troubling of gender on a person's identity in general and on her/his social space. In this seminar we will be looking at how gender trouble altered cultural awareness of gender representations and at its influence on other categories like class and race.
