This course teaches the setup and use of Linux-Systems. Participants learns how to navigate a Linux-System in a shell and how to perform basic operations on files from within a shell. Towards this end, a multitude of shell commands are introduced and explained. Furthermore, participants learn the basics of access control in a Linux-System. Following that, participants learn how to install and manage software on a Linux-System. The course covers a variety of Linux distributions and desktop environments. The use of tools for software development are explained next, for example, assemblers and compilers. Shell programming is introduced as well. Further topics are the boot process of a Linux-System, as well as the se of encryption tools for the protection of messages and network connections against unauthorized access and manipulation. The course covers a variety of non-technical topics as well, ranging from the philosophy of Free Software to the public discourse on the dissemination of cryptography versus the desire of state actors to control it.
This course is for beginners as well as advanced Linux-users.
