This course offers an introduction to the literary exegesis of the Qur’an. How does the composition and syntax of the Qur’an shape its meaning? What constitutes a metaphor and does the Qur’an contain synonymous words? To understand how exegetes treated these questions, we will first examine how the advent of the Qur’an gave rise to early Arabic philology: the emergence of grammatical schools, lexicography and a theory of Arabic rhetoric centered on the inimitability of Qur’anic Arabic. Second, we will examine how the language of the Qur’an was subjected to the linguistic theories and literary analysis of the grammarians and rhetoricians, often reflecting particular theological and legal considerations.
We will read primary Arabic texts written by grammarians, rhetoricians and exegetes, including al-Jurjani, at-Tabari, az-Zamakhshari, al-Baydawi, ar-Razi und al-Biqa’i.
