WiSe 16/17: Tourism as a Manifestation of and Motor for Global Integration

Ulrike Schaper

Comments

Tourism is based on the movement of people – a movement that became a mass phenomenon over the course of the 20th century. According to the World Tourism Organization’s annual report, in 2014 the steadily growing number of international tourists (defined as overnight visitors) reached just above 1,1 billion. Tourism has become an important industry and a growing sector of world economy. It accounts for 30 % of the world’s exports of services and 6 % of total exports. There can be no doubt about its present economic and cultural importance. Although international tourism is in a way a transnational phenomenon per se, it is often examined within national or regional/local settings as many studies focus on national tourism industries or distinct touristic localities. Global history has not yet devoted much attention to tourism. In this course we ask in how far tourism constitutes an object that can be beneficially addressed in a global history perspective and can serve to examine global integration. In order to explore tourism’s global history potential, we focus on its connections to the history of transport and mobility, we place tourism in (global) power relations e.g. in the context of Empire, Cold War and “development aid” and ask in what sense tourism encounters enhanced cultural exchange as well as notions of self and other, of “foreign” places or “the world”. close
