WiSe 16/17: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies I: Exploring Popular Culture
David Jefferson Amelang López
Comments
The aim of this course is to locate, delineate and explore popular culture in western society and discourse. Starting with the deceptively simple question ‘what is popular culture?’, we will analyse the different shapes and forms this ambiguous sub-class of cultural practices and values has taken throughout recent history, with special emphasis on the Anglophone countries. Topics of discussion will range from public forms of expression and performance of popular culture to its social and political dimensions, as well as the intersection of popular culture with other prominent discursive fields (including gender, race and identity).
