WiSe 16/17: Methods in Literary and Cultural Studies
Florian Sedlmeier
Comments
The seminar, open to PhD and advanced MA students, explores a wide range of theories and methods, which have been relevant to twentieth-century literary and cultural studies. These include precursors to our current notion of theory such as Walter Benjamin and Sigmund Freud, formalism and new criticism, structuralism and poststructuralism, hermeneutics and deconstruction, new historicism, feminism and gender studies, critical race theory and postcolonial studies, and various ends of Marxism. Aim of the seminar is decidedly not to provide a tool kit or an overview, but rather to foster a historicized understanding of crucial trajectories of methods and theories relevant to the study of literature and culture.
