WiSe 17/18: (PS/MWA) Political Behaviour in the European Union

Understanding and explaining political behaviour – such as of voters in elections or legislators in parliaments – is a key challenge for political scientists. This course combines a substantive focus on political behaviour in the European Union with training in academic skills for aspiring political scientists.
The substantive part of the course focuses on actors at the national and European level. We will draw on cutting-edge research to gain insights into questions such as: Why do citizens support or oppose European integration? How does this affect national elections? Why do some candidates have stronger incentives to campaign than others in European elections? What coalitions form in the Council of the EU and in the European Parliament? Why do EU member states comply with EU legislation? This will provide an overview of the state of the art of the field.
The skills part of the course introduces students to key issues and techniques in political science and broader academia. Using relevant examples, we will develop and apply a toolbox that allows for interpreting and contextualising existing research. This can inform students’ own assignments and research projects, thus equipping them for succeeding in the course and programme.
