This class invites students to study British punk culture during the seminal period of 1976-78. We will begin by reading a number of classic theoretical texts on topics such as the politics of popular music, the semiotics of style and the sociology of subcultures in order to build an analytical toolbox. Afterwards, we will use this toolbox to examine the various facets of punk - music, fashion, art, journalism, etc. – and discuss them in relation to questions of race, class and gender. The class will conclude with a poster session in which students will have the opportunity of presenting their own projects to fellow students and faculty members.
Participants will have to meet the standard requirements; regular attendance and the poster presentation are obligatory, full credits can be obtained by submitting a term paper.
A reading list will be distributed at the beginning of term. For a general introduction to the original British punk movement, England’s Dreaming: The Sex Pistols and Punk Rock by Jon Savage (London: Faber & Faber, 1991) makes ideal pre-term reading. Likewise, Dick Hebdige’s Subculture: The Meaning of Style (London: Methuen, 1979) remains a (very accessible) key text for the study of punk.
