WiSe 17/18: Kultur Korean Wave

This course is designed to introduce students to contemporary Korean culture, identity, politics, and society by exploring Korea’s cultural industries. It seeks to help students to develop a dynamic understanding of modern Korea by taking an interdisciplinary approach to some of the most important cultural, political and social issues of Korean society. To achieve its goals, this course will provide an introduction to the scholarly study of the cultural industries in general, exploring how scholars have theoretically and methodologically engaged them as cultural entities/sites of practice/ideological constructs. We will examine the dialogic relationship between culture and the culture industry that operate in contextually-specific ways, as well as consider how theoretical conceptions on agency and structure can help us to understand the outcomes of these mediations. We will also trace the historical development of Korea and Korean cultural industries from the early twentieth century to the present. In doing so, our goal is to consider, delineate, and compare what each theory brings to the range of theoretical and critical approaches. Schließen
