WiSe 17/18: Environmental Politics in China and India

Quality of life in urban areas and rural livelihoods in China and India is threatened by the impacts of rapid industrialization and urbanization processes and a dramatic increase in electricity consumption and production. The aim of this seminar is to explore the factors which shape China's and India's environmental governance and performance. We will shed light on the dynamics and mechanisms explaining policy change in various environmentally relevant policy subsystems such as pollution eradication, climate change, energy, forestry, and urbanization. During the seminar sessions, we will study the interplay between institutions and corporate governmental and non-governmental actors influencing the policy processes in the two BRICS countries.
The seminar is organized in three parts - these include an overview of theoretical concepts that will be applied, insights into the development trajectories of environmental governance and case studies on environmental politics in various policy subsystems.
