Kommentar
Virtue epistemology is one of the main strands in contemporary analytic epistemology. Its distinguishing marks are, first, a focus on the normative aspects of epistemology, linking the theory of knowledge closely to ethics and to the realm of action; and second, a focus on the knowing subject, its ability and character. In so doing, virtue epistemology addresses two of the oldest and most basic questions of epistemology: what is knowledge? And what is so good about having knowledge?
In the seminar, we will discuss contemporary contributions to virtue epistemology, which develop it in different directions, apply it to classic problems of epistemology, and open up new avenues of research (e.g. about epistemic injustice and the value of knowledge). Because virtue epistemology touches on many questions and alternative theories, the class will also help students acquire a general overview of contemporary analytic epistemology.
Readings will be provided through Blackboard. Most readings will be from "Virtue Epistemology. Contemporary Readings", edited by John Greco und John Turri (MIT Press, 2012).
The class will be held in English.
