The course will offer an introduction to theories of globalization in the field of literature and literary studies. We will be concerned with current debates on ‘world literature’, cultural translation, and travelling theories, and try to assess the impact of global media and transnational publishing houses. In addition, we will discuss what literature can tell us about globalization, and how globalization impacts the form of the contemporary novel.
Reading: Students should purchase Kiran Desai, The Inheritance of Loss (2006); Hari Kunzru, Transmission (2005), David Mitchell, Ghostwritten (1999), and Taiye Selasi, Ghana Must Go (2013). All novels are available in inexpensive paperback editions. Shorter texts will be made available on Blackboard.
Assessment: will be on the basis of regular attendance and active participation in class activities (response papers, online discussion forum, short presentations).
