Rein Raud
Kommentar
The course - seminar and exercise - will be dedicated to the development of Buddhist thought in Japan. The first sessions will provide a background of Buddhism, its development in India and China, while the main body of the course will be dedicated to influential Buddhist thinkers (Kukai, Dogen, Shinran, Bankei) and schools (Zen, Pure Land, Nichiren) as well as their impact on modern Japanese thought (in particular, Kyoto school philosophy and D.T.Suzuki) and its contemporary dimension, including Buddhist-influenced new religions (Soka Gakkai etc). The course will be taught in English, classical texts and research literature on various topics will be read in English translation, samples of original texts will be analysed in class. Some assignments will be in Japanese, but a non-Japanese alternative will be provided for students of other specializations who wish to take the course. Schließen
