Kommentar
This course enlarges upon selected topics of the Grundkurs (“Introduction to TEFL”), and applies them to classroom practice. Issues such as dealing with heterogeneity and facilitating communicative competence are linked with teaching methods and techniques. The course also covers related practical topics such as lesson planning and classroom management skills.
Students are expected to attend class regularly and to participate actively, which includes the design and preparation of learning materials and lesson plans in and outside of class, as well as the involvement in critical self-reflection discussions as part of the LLL. The topic of the “Hausarbeit” (requirements will be discussed at the commencement of class; requirements to be found in the style sheet) can either be taken from this course or from the “Grundkurs”, the first constituent of the “Basismodul”. The paper is to be handed in after successful completion of both module constituents (“Grundkurs & Proseminar”).
Focus areas:
The course is part of a research project (Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung of the BMBF, project „K2Teach-Know how to teach“). As an actual field-trial, the didactic knowledge gained and skills developed in class will be immediately explored during a so-called „Lehr-Lern-Labor (LLL)“. For that purpose, pupil from fifth grade are invited to Freie Universität Berlin twice during the span of this course. Participants will thus be required to prepare learning materials for the LLL. Subsequently, these teaching materials will then be discussed and re-evaluated in a communicative and critical self-reflection process. Further information on the LLL will be provided in the first session.
Literature:
All necessary literature will be provided by the course instructor C. Klempin and will be made accessible on Blackboard (or via mail if not possible otherwise).
Course structure:
Group work, hands-on activities, preparing LLL-materials, mini-lectures, micro teaching units, post-LLL-reflection discussions.
