WiSe 17/18: Regional Politics in Eurasia

Ann-Sophie Gast, Salome Mineashvili

Comments

The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked the emergence of 15 independent states connected by cultural, historical, political and economic ties, but at the same time divided by diverse backgrounds, tensions and conflicts. The post-Soviet region, or Eurasia, as the region is more frequently referred to today, forms a complex regional entity which is characterized by simultaneous processes of integration and fragmentation. The course aims to provide students with an analytical framework and theoretical tools to understand political developments and regional dynamics in Eurasia from an IR perspective. We will cover topics such as political systems, economic transformation and democratization, Russian hegemony, regional security, conflicts and cooperation, energy politics and the role of external actors in the region to grasp the factors that determine regional politics. Even though the course is structured by topic, we will pay attention to the characteristics of the sub-regions Central Asia, Caucasus, the Eastern European post-Soviet states as well as the regional hegemon Russia. Students are required to actively participate in class and contribute to the seminar with input presentations and discussion papers. The seminar is primarily aimed at students of political science and international relations, but can also be attended by students of other fields of study. close
