WiSe 17/18: International Institutions and Organizations in the World Economy

Justus Dreyling

Comments

Since the end of World War II, the world has not only become more integrated in economic terms, it has also seen a proliferation of international institutions and organizations that seek to regulate these emerging global markets. The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the main theoretical approaches to international cooperation and the key international institutions of the world economy. The first part of the course introduces the main theoretical approaches that provide alternative explanations for key questions about international cooperation. Under what conditions do states create international institutions? What explains their design? How do they affect state behavior? When do they change? How do they interact with other international institutions? The second part analyzes these questions with regard to specific institutions, including the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the G7 and G20, the International Labour Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the Basel Accords. The third part is devoted to the development and discussion of research questions and research designs that will serve as the basis for student term papers. Preparation of required readings is crucial to achieving the goals of this course. Regular attendance and participation in course discussions are equally necessary to engage in vibrant intellectual exchange. Beyond that, all students are required to participate in a presentation on a class subject. For graded credit, students need to write a 10-15 page term paper. close
