Advanced Seminar
WiSe 17/18: S-Lit. Stud.: Periods-Genres-Concepts: James Joyce
Stephan Laqué
Comments
James Joyce is one of the most prominent and influential literary voices of high modernism. He taught readers and writers to pay attention to the seemingly ordinary and insignificant – to its textures and multi-layered complexity, and to the constraints and conditions of its existence. In his work, we can witness how “human character changed” (in Virginia Woolf’s famous phrase) and how this change affected the way in which all aspects of the world were to change irrevocably. The focus of the seminar will be on Joyce’s narrative work. Please purchase copies of Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses (all Penguin Modern Classics). close
