Seminar
WiSe 17/18: Anglo-American Modernism
Anne Enderwitz
Comments
The seminar focuses on formal and experimental aspects as well as philosophical concerns of British and American modernist literature. Driven by a desire for innovation and fuelled by international and transatlantic networks, modernist (and proto-modernist) writers developed new narrative techniques (such as stream-of-consciousness), included multiple points of view, reorganized or shattered the temporal order of narrative, and relished the materiality of language. Through aesthetic innovation and thematic concerns they gave voice to epistemological relativism, existential despair, and the complex conditions and constitution of subjectivity close
