Comments
This seminar addresses both historical immigration into Latin America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and emigration from Latin America in the second half of the twentieth century. In a first step we will familiarize ourselves with the major approaches to the history of migration, followed by two blocs on historical case studies (immigration and emigration). Apart from secondary literature on these topics, we will also look at some primary sources, with a particular focus on serial sources. Geographically, the first bloc concentrates on Argentina, Brazil, and the Caribbean, the second on Mexico, Central America, and the United States. One goal is to prepare students for their future M.A. thesis, through several writing exercises. These can be in German, Spanish, English, and Portuguese, while (except for primary sources), the literature we read in this seminar will be English – unless everyone prefers German, the language in class will also be English. close
