WiSe 17/18: Theories of Media
Christoph Hesse
Comments
Virtually everyone would agree that media to an ever increasing degree shape the way people think and act, the way they behave toward one another, the way they perceive (and respond to) the world, in short, the way they live their lives. Though hardly anyone knows who they are, the people. Is it really true of most of the 7.4 billion human beings on earth that media exert the most decisive influence on their work, their social relations, their beliefs? And what on earth is that, media? In this seminar, we shall discuss some of the many answers to that latter question by way of introductory readings. The various theories of media we will touch upon might occasionally also include assumptions about language, signs, perception, technical apparatuses, and society.
Participants will be expected to present one piece of text in class and to submit a paper (in English or German) on a particular subject of their own choice by the end of the semester.
