Comments
Religion is an unavoidable feature to understand and explain Latin America: from its rich popular culture (with its pilgrimages, sacrifice, home shrines and local fiestas) to its complex political scenario, which includes the Catholic Church as a key political actor. In addition, religions in the region are currently experiencing a diversification and reconfiguration, due the growing influence of different Christian denominations, New Age, neo-esoteric, and self-styled religiosities, as well as through popular religious syncretism. In this course, we will examine some of the recent research on the field, considering both its empirical results and the theoretical and conceptual challenges this dynamic field poses to scholars analyzing religious diversity and the renewed role that religions play in contemporary societies. close
