This course introduces students to the basic concepts and methods in the study and description of language, with modern English as the primary object of investigation. Students will be introduced to the different levels of linguistic analysis (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics) and to different fields in linguistics, e.g. sociolinguistics. Students will be made familiar with linguistic terminology in English, as well as with some current methods and tools for linguistic analysis, which will enable them to pursue further studies in linguistics.
