WiSe 17/18: International Development Cooperation as Professional Career?

The objective of the seminar is to inform the students about the opportunities and challenges for a professional career in international development cooperation (DC). For this purpose the seminar will provide basic theoretical and empirical knowledge about most relevant approaches, issues and main actors in this field. This includes an overview about globalization and the impact on low-income and middle-income countries, the current discourse about the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development (SDGs), the Aid/Development Effectiveness Agenda and discussions about Green Economy.
The following topics will be high on the agenda: Opportunities and challenges of managing international migration and refugee trends, poverty eradication and employment promotion, conflict prevention/ security development, democracy and good governance, rural development and food security as well as good practices for the integration of climate change in core development cooperation activities. To understand the specific and complex role of the various actors involved, the following organizations will be analyzed and finally discussed with regard to possible professional perspectives:
-Multilateral, regional and bilateral organizations,
-“Emerging Countries”, incl. PR China,
-Private Actors/Multinational Enterprises,
-Civil Society Organizations.
On the basis of country case studies selected projects and programs will be analyzed. With this knowledge achieved the course will be finalized with a simulation game about German bilateral DC.
Additionally the participants will benefit from:
-Discussions with high-level experts, incl. visits to various organizations and
-the provision of information and support to identify relevant traineeships.
A selected bibliography and further documents will be posted on “Blackboard”.
