WiSe 17/18: HS-Interfacing Linguistics+Literature: Reading Beckettian Prose
Andreas Mahler
Comments
Samuel Beckett can be seen as one of the most severe artists of English prose. His main concern is no longer all that much storytelling but textmaking. The seminar will follow this textmaking process in sessions of highly attentive close readings of Beckettian shorter prose in order to explore Beckett’s gradual shift from worldmaking mimesis to media-conscious performance. Participants will be expected to own, bring along, and have familiarised themselves with the following edition: Samuel Beckett. The Complete Short Prose 1929-1989. Ed. S.E. Gontarski. New York: Grove Press, 1995. For theoretical background see Wolfgang Iser. The Fictive and the Imaginary. Charting Literary Anthropology. Tr. David Henry Wilson. Baltimore, MD: The Johns Hopkins UP, 1993. close
