“Being Together"
The course will be divided in two parts:
Part 1
As a starting point I will propose certain questions and issues that I have encountered in my work as a choreographer immersed in a very specific territory: the Favela da Maré in Rio de Janeiro. I am also concerned with how to articulate artistic creation with the development of an Arts Centre and a Dance School. We will work from the idea of “being together”, using strategies of creation linked by a dramaturgical line that will be developed together with the students, articulating political, ethical and aesthetic aspects. What challenges does that situation pose? How do we approach the possible relations of being together? How can each participant find a place – although always provisional – and still retain her or his similarities and (gender) differences? What unites us today? How can we find possibilities to share that space? How can we create a collective, even if temporary, letting us get infected by the other? How can we consider the singularity in this collective? What rituals, sacrifices, and agreements are necessary for the constitution of a collective, even if temporary?
Part 2
The classes will be organised around the sharing of different creative processes used by my dance company in developing our work, and simultaneously used to create a connection between social and pedagogical projects. We will adopt a collective creation practice, and the material will be developed incorporating individual needs and desires in a communal act, always articulating political, ethical and aesthetic aspects. In my classes, I will also work with the theme of my new creation (première in the fall of 2018), which broadly addresses the situation of women from a gender identity perspective.
