WiSe 17/18: Das arabische Wörterbuch: Arbeitsinstrument und Unterhaltungsliteratur
Colinda Lindermann
Comments
Arabic lexicography developed into an independent scholarly discipline at an early point in Arabic-Islamic history, yielding many types of dictionaries dealing with highly diverse aspects of the Arabic lexicon. These works range from short treatises on linguistic exotica to comprehensive dictionaries treating the entire lexicon in a systematic fashion.
In this course, we will examine Arabic dictionaries from two different perspectives. First, we will learn how to use these works as tools for study and research. We will discuss the standard reference dictionaries, their structure, and the terminology and information we can expect from them. Secondly, we will read dictionary entries dealing with diverse topics: speech errors, loanwords, enantionyms (words denoting both a certain thing and its opposite), etc. By reading anecdotes, jokes, and fun facts, we will discover that Arabic dictionaries are much more than reference works.
