WiSe 17/18: Modern Histories of Arabic Literature
Rossella De Luca
Comments
This course will offer an overview of the description and analysis of Arabic literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Particular emphasis will be placed on the historiography of Arabic literature, as developed in the works of Jurji Zaydan (d.1914), Louis Cheikho (d.1927) and Carl Brockelmann (d. 1956). Through close readings of Zaydan’s Tarikh adab al-lugha al-‘arabiyya (1911-1914), we will examine the periodization of literary history and classification of genres. Excerpts from Arabic sources will also be analyzed. close
