WiSe 17/18: Anthropology of Islam (Focus on Sufism)
Nasima Selim
Comments
Anthropology of Islam is a graduate seminar aimed at introducing students to the diverse enactments of Islam with a focus on Sufism in the Muslim world and Muslim-minority societies from an anthropological perspective. Three different approaches to Islam and Sufism as tradition (Asad), symbolic system (Geertz), and hermeneutical engagement (Ahmed) will be discussed. The seminar will bring together Islam and Sufism by examining the contested relationship between these two terms/phenomena. Part I. Introduction will provide background knowledge about the topic, discussing how many anthropologists had focused on Sufism. Part II. Ethnographies will engage with several recent ethnographies toward developing the skills of reading, writing, and telling theoretically-informed stories.
