WiSe 17/18: South East Asia: Joint Challenges, Different Pathways

This course will explore one of the most fascinating regions today – Southeast Asia. This area is contingent to East Asia, with China and Japan as dominant actors, and to South Asia, where India and Pakistan are entangled in conflicts. SEA is a region that has managed to create an association that may be the second most successful after the EU, ASEAN. Still, when it comes to defining attitudes to the big neighbor on the north, the region often looks fragmented. The SEA experience was shaped in large part by mostly French colonialism, well into the early 1950s. Today’s culture and economics are still difficult to understand without this legacy. One of the most divisive wars after the end of World War II also played out in the area – the Vietnam/ American War. Leftist movements in the region and globally were astonished that one of the most vicious genocides were orchestrated here (by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s), and that two allegedly socialist countries could actually go to war against each other (Vietnam and China, 1979). Today, SEA is both a partly homogenous and yet quite fragmented region. The nature of political regimes and economic models differs. New developments in globalization threaten established economic systems. There is a vibrant scenery and market for movies and music. However, issues related to water management (Mekong), poaching, and trafficking cast clouds on SEA’s horizon. The seminar will analyze these trends against the background of the SEA history, and consider their global impacts. This lecture uses the E-learning platform Blackboard.
