WiSe 17/18: The Ottoman Empire in Global History
Steininger, Fabian
Comments
As a large multi-ethnic and multi-religious state headed by Muslim rulers widely accepted as the Caliphs of Islam, the Ottoman Empire was in many ways an exceptional polity in the world of the 19th century. Nonetheless, recent research has underlined the degree to which developments in the Empire were embedded in synchronous regional and global transformations. Delineated by the initiation of the large-scale ‘Tanzimat’-reforms in 1839 and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, respectively, the seminar aims to trace Ottoman developments of the ‘Age of Reforms’ in a global framework. A special focus will lie on mid-level or intermediate transformations, such as urban governance or dress-codes, to illustrate the diverse and creative ways by which global intellectual and material resources were adapted and transformed. close
