WiSe 17/18: From Peacekeeping to Prevention, Stabilization and Counterterrorism: A New Era of United Nations Interventionism?
Markus-Michael Müller
Comments
In recent years, UN peacekeeping missions have undergone substantial changes. While during the first two
decades after the end of the Cold War, UN missions primarily aimed at keeping the peace, after 9/11, the focus
of UN interventions increasingly shifted towards peace enforcement, and more recently, towards stabilization,
prevention and counterterrorism. In assessing the causes and consequences of these developments, the
seminar offers insights into the dynamics of continuity and change in UN interventions. It introduces students to
recent theoretical debates on these topics and offers empirical insights from case studies from around the globe. close
