Comments
“If I can make it there…I’ll make it anywhere” – no other city in the United States has been the object of artistic admiration and myth-making – as an icon of modernity, progress, wealth and the arts. At the same time, throughout its history the city has also become synonymous with poverty, crime and political corruption. In this class we will address the history of NYC in a chronological fashion in order to discuss major historical events and these perceptions and myths, from its colonial beginnings until today. Taking the case of New York City this class will introduce students to major topics of American history (e.g. colonial history, migration, slavery) as well as basic techniques and methods of doing history. close
