WiSe 17/18: European language policy and language education policy

Students are invited to register for the seminar by e-mail: wolfgang.mackiewicz@fu-berlin.de. They will receive a seminar plan and a list of pertinent policy documents and scholarly publications a couple of weeks before the first meeting of the seminar. close
Comments
The seminar will address the following issues: (i) The constellation of languages in Europe – the historical dimension and recent developments. (ii) The need or otherwise for (European) language policy and language education policy; different concepts of language policy / language education policy. (iii) The development of language policies and language education policies in the context of European co-operation and integration – the Council of Europe and the European Union - and the impact or otherwise of these policies at lower levels. (iv) Linguistic challenges posed by EU expansion, trans-European mobility, migration into Europe, internationalisation / globalisation, and by EU policies. (v) Regional and minority languages and dialects. (vi) The linguistic dimension of the creation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) / European Research Area (ERA), and linguistic implications of the internationalisation of higher education and research in Europe.
The focus of the seminar will be on the analysis of policy documents and policy-driven initiatives, especially on documents published and initiatives taken in recent years.
The seminar will be conducted in English, but participants will be able to express themselves in German if they so wish.
Each participant is expected to prepare a brief oral presentation of one of the seminar themes, and, if s/he so wants, linked to this, a seminar paper (15 pages).
