WiSe 18/19: Global Sociologies: Decentring Sociological Theory

Canonical sociological theory was constructed as situated knowledge based on at least three constitutive experiences of the world. Firstly, it focused on experiences of white and heteronormative men within national societies of the Global North. Secondly, it reacted to transformative processes taking place at the time, such as industrialization and urbanization, with a narrative of modernity that theorized social evolution as identified with the development of industrial and urban societies. Thirdly, sociological theory relied on the premise that an ontological divide between nature and culture was characteristic of modern societies.
Concomitantly, sociologists speaking from a variety of social and regional positionalities have contributed to pluralize sociological knowledge at least since the first decades of the 20th Century. Recovering these multiple voices is today an imperative task for sociologists interested in transforming sociology from a self-description of social experiences of a tiny portion of the world population, as found in canonical sociology, into a truly global discipline. The seminar aims at discussing a sample of previous and contemporary non-canonical sociological theories which have contributed to reconcile sociology with its critical, non-conformist and global vocation.
