Vertiefungsseminar
WiSe 18/19: S-Socioling. and Varieties of English II: Discourse Analysis: Ideology and Identity
Anna Islentyeva
Kommentar
The seminar introduces a number of approaches to discourse and discourse analytical methods applied to the study of texts from different genres; it is primarily aimed at the critical investigation of relevant social and political issues. In contemporary linguistics, it is assumed that discourse analytic methods are incompatible with the corpus-based approach. It is, however, a rather misleading assumption. Taking a text as a basic unit of investigation, the seminar will show how corpus linguistic techniques can be combined with methods worked out in (critical) discourse analysis in a number of ways. It has been widely acknowledged that the role of the modern media is crucial in the construction of ideologies and identities. The seminar aims to investigate unequal power relations that are produced and re-produced in texts of different genres and to reveal which linguistic tools at the grammatical and semantic levels (metaphors, construction of key agents in the discourse) are responsible for these processes.
