Kommentar
Set up as a combination of critical readings and ethnographic exercises, this seminar covers the emergence of the anthropology of Islam as a distinct sub-field within the history of the discipline, through a critical discussion of early key texts (Geertz; Gellner; el-Zein; Asad) and contemporary debates. It includes discussions of selected topics in recent anthropological research, looking at influential case studies and contested arguments (e.g. on gender; knowledge; ritual practice). Hereby, attention is paid to the conceptual approaches of authors in relation to their ethnographic work. In parallel, complementary ethnographic exercises are pursued, in reflexive dialogue with Muslims and the experience of Muslim settings in Berlin, in order to include some direct engagement with practical dimensions of ethnographic research. Thus overall, in the run of this course, familiarity with key texts and core arguments that have shaped the field that has come to be known as the anthropology of Islam will be achieved, while a critical view on is cultivated.
