WiSe 18/19: PS-Medieval English Literatures II: Medieval Alexander
Wolfram Keller
Kommentar
Alexander was a legendary figure—one might say: even in ‘his own day’. In late Antiquity, stories about Alexander’s life and about his miraculous conquests abounded. In the Middle Ages, stories about Alexander remained extremely popular and were translated and adapted in(to) most of the European vernacular languages. After a discussion of the genre of romaunce and a brief look at the complicated reception history of the Alexander tradition, we shall primarily read Kyng Alisaunder, which we shall then compare to Alexander A and Alexander B. The focus of our in-class discussions will be on the way in which Middle English romances transform the Alexander tradition and how these texts represent Antiquity.
