WiSe 18/19: Rapid development in China and India - green and inclusive?

Kirsten Jörgensen-Ullmann

Comments

Both China and India offer interesting perspectives on how rapidly developing countries, which have displayed high economic growth rates over the last decade, deal with environmental pollution and climate change on the one hand and with social inequality on the other. Poverty eradication often serves to underpin the need for unconstrained economic growth. As a result, China and India suffer from severe environmental pollution and degradation of natural living conditions. Time and again cities in both countries are forced to issue severe air pollution warnings. During the last few years, both countries have introduced ideas and concepts which drive inclusive low-carbon development, whilst addressing the need for a more ecologically sound and socially acceptable form of sustainable development. Our goal is to become familiar with the literature and theoretical concepts dominating the academic debate about green growth, low-carbon development and social inclusiveness. We will study examples from China and India, looking at the factors that shape processes of social inclusiveness and of the greening of the economy. The seminar intends to impart the analytical skills needed to effectively research policies and politics related to inclusive low-carbon development. We will reflect upon scientific literature on these issues and discuss adequate theoretical starting points for empirical research. Furthermore we will research the key facts and figures and conduct small illustrative case studies in order to identify influential factors in this field. close
