Jean-Michel Turcotte
Comments
This course provides an examination of 20th century Canadian international history by exploring relevant historiography and debates in the field. The aim is to focus on reading and discussing relevant work. A central question will be how diplomatic, cultural and economic, and military interactions with other states shaped Canada’s political and social development. Special attention will be dedicated to Canada’s evolving relationships with the United Kingdom and the United States. We will also look at Canada’s growing role in the international community (i.e., the League of Nations, United Nations, etc.) since the 1900s. International and transnational aspects will be emphasized in this course. Students are encouraged to obtain a broader understanding of Canadian history in an international framework, NGOs, transnational social movements and ideology. At the end of the course, participants should be capable of critically discussing the merits of different approaches and debates within the field of 20th-century Canadian international history. close
