        Qualification goals:
The students are able to analyze the coupling between tectonics, climate, sediment transport and deposition in sedimentary basins. They can interpret and reconstruct the formation and evolution of sedimentary basins from analyzing the lithology, facies and geometry of the sedimentary fill, the tectonic structures and tectono-thermal subsidence history of the basin and assess their resource potential.
Contents:
The aim of the course is to provide the students with an overview of the different types of sedimentary basins in their plate-tectonic context and their characteristics. Focus is given on:
(1) Structure, formation and filling of sedimentary basins in different plate-tectonic settings;
(2) Coupling between climate and tectonic processes and their effects on the geometry, structure, lithology and facies of sedimentary units;
(3) Methods for quantitative basin analysis (subsidence analysis, thermal history);
Seismic interpretation and correlation of stratigraphic profiles.
