WiSe 18/19: Affective and Emotional Economies

Thomas Stodulka

Comments

Affective and emotional economies can be studied from various perspectives. Sara Ahmed (2004) describes ‘affective economies’ as cultural politics of emotions that create "others" by aligning some bodies with each other inside a community and marginalizing other bodies as outside. Johan Lindquist (2009) has used the concept ‘emotional economies’ in his study on the labor migration of young men and women. I have described particular emotional, affective and empathetic skills of street-related and homeless persons as ‘emotional economy’ (Stodulka 2017) that transforms stigma and marginality into social, material and cultural capital (Bourdieu 1986). This course combines the anthropology of affect and emotion with economic anthropology. Introductory sessions to both anthropological subdisciplines will be complemented by ethnographic case studies.
