Comments
Focusing on the overlaps between the history of knowledge, environmental history, and the history of science, this course will trace the transnational connections between North America, Europe, and its colonies since the 19th century. Questions we will address include: what are the history of knowledge, environmental history, and the history of science, and what do historians writing those histories do? How did ideas on the environment evolve since the nineteenth century? How did North American and European governments, international organizations, and transnational actors promote and organize knowledge transfers and scientific collaborations across borders to address new environmental concerns? What were the motivations, goals, interests, expectations, and concepts behind such policies and how did those change over time? The class also includes a (virtual) three week-cooperation with the history class of Dominique Marshall at Carleton University in Canada and will be taught jointly during this time. close
