WiSe 18/19: Humanitarian Aid and US Foreign Relations between WWI and the Cold War
Maximilian Klose
Comments
This course introduces students to the field of humanitarian aid in international history, focusing on US humanitarian engagement between WWI and the early Cold War. As a response to human disasters caused by the two world wars, various groups within US society called upon their nation’s newfound international responsibility to help those in need. Thus began a flood of humanitarian aid activities by private and governmental organizations first in Europe, later in the global theaters of the Cold War and the so-called “Third World”. The course will investigate American humanitarian engagement regarding the following questions: Who were the actors in US humanitarian aid? Whom did they aid and how? Which effects did their aid have in target regions? How were these effects discussed among US public and political circles? Can we investigate individual motivations for providing aid and what do these motivations tell us about the actors’ self-perception in the national and international context? close
