WiSe 18/19: Social stratification and the intergenerational transmission of social privilege
Tim Sawert
Comments
In the research placement we will focus on questions of social stratification and the reproduction of social inequality from a quantitative perspective. The literature we are going to read will focus on comparing the social stratification of different countries, over different time periods, e.g. how did the distribution of higher educational degrees change over time and what implications could this have for the reproduction of social inequalities. Furthermore, we are going to analyse how socioeconomically privileged families reproduce their privilege by means of specific child-rearing practices and edu-cational strategies.
Aside the specific thematic introduction, one focus will be on the analyses of the litera-ture we are going to read: firstly, we will analyse the literature according to their struc-ture to develop an understanding how a research article should be structured. Second-ly, we will pay further attention to problems in the structuration and in the way the au-thors describe their models and interpret their data. Based on these insights, the stu-dents will present their own research on an ongoing (weekly) basis and we will discuss potential problems, solutions and next steps in the seminar. The students will be invited to either conduct an analysis of survey data or to plan and conduct their own experi-mental research.
