Adrian Lehne, Veronika Springmann
Comments
Within this seminar we will explore the various ways in which law and sexuality were intertwined. In this context the seminar focuses on the interaction between law and society. Therefore, we will investigate how law influenced cultural norms and how cultural norms affected codified law. Furthermore, the course asks how activist dealt with law in order to archive change in sexual politics.
Throughout the 19th and 20th century the ways in which sexuality was regulated transformed significantly and differed regionally. Using examples on the regulation of reproduction, marriage, ‘incest’ , and sexual health, we will explore how through time and in different places (USA, UK, Poland, Germany and Israel) norm and deviance was produced and transformed. An emphasis will be placed on the mobilization of law and activism.
As part of the course we will visit the archive of the Gay Museum Berlin. The course will conclude with a conference style presentation of individual projects on February 14th, 2019. close
