This course introduces undergraduate students to the basic concepts and methods in the study and description of language, with modern English as the primary focus. Students will be introduced to different levels of linguistic analysis such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics as well as to different fields in linguistics, e.g. sociolinguistics. Students will be made familiar with linguistic terminology in English as well as with some current methods and tools for linguistic analysis, which will enable them to pursue further studies in linguistics.
