WiSe 18/19: PS-Surveying English Literatures II: Contemporary Scottish Literature
Wolfram Keller
Comments
The aim of this seminar is to survey recent developments in contemporary Scottish literature—fiction, poetry, and drama. After a short introduction to the history of Scottish literature and a brief look at recent socio-cultural, political developments, we shall read works by contemporary Scottish authors, including short stories by Janice Galloway (Collected Stories [2009]), Louise Welsh’s play Tamburlaine Must Die (2004) as well as James Robertson’s novel And the Land Lay Still (2010) and Ali Smith’s How to be Both (2014). We shall also look at poetry by Jenni Fagan (from The Dead Queen of Bohemia [2016]) and John Burnside (from Still Life with Snake [2017]). Students are strongly encouraged to read Robertson’s novel by the beginning of the semester. close
